How to use your Thuraya Phone

Activation

Please let us know once you’ve received your phone so that we can activate your SIM card for you – and load your pre-paid airtime, if applicable. We will send your phone number to you the moment we have activated your SIM card.

Network Registration & Making a Call

  • In order to make a call stand in an open space with horizon to horizon view, extend the antenna straight upwards, and ensure to have at least 3 bars of signal. Your PIN code is on the credit-card-size part of your SIM card. Wait for the phone to register on the network, and ensure to have at least 3 bars of signal before making a call.
  • To make a call: Use the international number format of “+” followed by a country code, area code (without the leading zero) and telephone number, and then press the green key to connect the call.

Text Messaging on Thuraya Phones

We are aware of some issues, on some cellular networks, with regards to SMS messages sent from Iridium not arriving on people’s cell phones. This is because many cellular operators couldn’t be bothered to implement the termination arrangements to receive the relatively low volume of text messages from the satellite networks. You should test the SMS service to make sure the country and cellular network you’re sending messages to are capable of receiving it.

Connecting to the Internet with your Thuraya XT

Thuraya phones come with internet connectivity software in the box, which makes it very easy to establish an internet connection from your laptop, using the Thuraya phone as a USB modem. This will give you 60kbps of throughput on your phone’s internet connection – which is the same speed as dial-up internet.

Using Thuraya Voicemail

Dial 123 on SAT-mode to access your voicemail, or +8821 610 0123 to access voicemail from a landline or cell phone.
